The Simple Past Tense

Introduction
The simple past tense is one of the most common tenses in English. Its form is the same with all subjects. It is usually formed by adding -ED to the verb. Before you continue the lesson read the following passage and try to see how the verbs are formed and used:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of five years old and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died.
The verbs "was, lived,started, wrote, died" are in the simple past tense.
Notice that:
  • lived, started,died are regular past forms.
  • was, wrote are irregular past forms.
Regular verbs:
The verbs "lived, started, died" are regular past forms. The rule is the following:

 Irregular verbs:

The verbs "was, wrote" are irregular past forms. "Was" is the simple past of "to be"; "wrote" is the simple past of "write".
There is no rule for these verbs. You should learn them by heart.

Remember:

didn't is the short form of did not. You can say either:

  • I did not play basketball, or I didn't play basketball.

Descriptive text, Meaning and Exercises
Descritive text adalah teks yang bertujuan untuk menjelaskan secara rinci tentang orang, tempat, benda atau binatang.

Struktur dari teks Descriptive text yaitu:
·       identification (pengenalan terhadap sesuatu yang akan digambarkan)
·       description (penjelasan secara rinci mengenai bagian-bagian, kualitas, ukuran atau kondisi fisik dari sesuatu yang dibicarakan)
·       conclusion (kesimpulan) - tidak harus ada, optional.

Ciri-ciri bahasa yang digunakan yaitu:
·       fokus pada tokoh atau benda khusus
·       menggunakan Simple Present Tense (Verb s/es - is, are, am)
·       menggunakan kata sifat (adjective) untuk menjelaskan orang, tempat, benda atau binatang tersebut
·       merupakan pendapat/opini dari penulis

Contoh 

     One of the most interesting animals in the zoo is the giraffe.
      Giraffe has big brown eyes. They are protected by very thick lashes. Giraffe has brown spots on the skin. This coloring helps protect the giraffe. It also has two short horns on its head.
      Giraffe is so tall, and it makes it interesting.

Bali is an island in the Indonesian archipelago. It is in the south of the equator and has warm weather all the year. The rainy season is November to April, but it can rain anytime. Bali is 120 kilometres wide from east to west and 80 kilometres from north to south, so everyone is quite close to the sea. Bali is shaped like a diamond. Mount Agung, a volcano, is 3,142 metres high and visible from far away. Most of the people are Hindus. There are many temples and many religious festivals.
        Tourism is the most important industry. Many tourists visit Bali to see the beautiful scenery and interesting festivals, to swim in the warm seas, to look at the beautiful mountains and valleys, and to shop for inexpensive and beautiful clothes, paintings and wood crafts.
